Recently I’ve watched “Radio Bikini”, a documentary film by British film maker Robert Stone about the “Operation Crossroads” nuclear testings. The misfire of nuclear testings is symbolized through personal tragedy and it is devastating. After couple of days, I’ve watched some US movies and commercials about the American Way of life in the Suburbs. It’s more than obvious that life in the suburbs provided the model for the American Dream in the post WWII era. I was moved by that contrast between the image of happy Americans shopping at the mall and the US soldiers, who were actually happy because they were told that there was no danger of radiation. “The Lie” is my way of musically expressing the irony between those facts.

About the song: I was reading an article about the Zone of Silence in Mexico, a desert patch that is the subject of an urban myth that claims it is an area where radio signals cannot be received. A place where there is no communication. The phrase Zone of Silence made me think of the Desert Fathers, (hermits, ascetics, and monks who lived mainly in the Scetes desert of Egypt beginning around the third century AD) and especially Hesychasm (from the Greek for “stillness, rest, quiet, silence”), a mystical tradition and movement that originated with the Desert Fathers and was central to their practice of prayer. I find it very similar to the Buddha’s Silence. (in the life and teaching of the Buddha, true Silence leads to Truth by avoiding both wordiness and wordlessness because such Silence is Truth). So my idea of Desert of Silence is a place when no one can reach you but your inner self and a place when you remain silent and empty your mind. A magical place when you drop your ego, your thoughts, your worries and you just meditate and experience the miracle of being alive.
